Frequently Asked Questions
What ages does Brooklyn Schoolhouse serve?
Brooklyn Schoolhouse serves children ages 2 to 5 years old. See our Programs page for more information.
How many teachers are in each classroom?
Maintaining a low child-teacher ratio is important to us. This allows us to give each child our undivided attention. At any given time, there will always be three to four adults present in each classroom. In our Multiage Class, there are often four teachers and 18 children.
Do you offer a flexible schedule?
In efforts to cultivate a consistent learning environment, we do not offer flexible scheduling. Please let us know if you have a special circumstance for which you would like to be considered and see our Programs page for specific times of each class.
How do you handle separation?
A gentle individualized separation process is key to ensuring that young children, families, and their caregivers feel comfortable in a new space. For the start of school, a select family member or caregiver will be welcomed into our classroom space to co-play, observe, and practice the process of separating. We host an annual workshop on separation for new families at the start of each school year to further explain the philosophy underlying our process.
Does my child have to be toilet-trained to attend Brooklyn Schoolhouse?
No, children do not need to be toilet-trained to attend Brooklyn Schoolhouse. We will meet your child where they are and support you with your toileting goals as needed.
Can my child attend if they receive Early Intervention (EI) or have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?
All children are welcome at Brooklyn Schoolhouse. Children at Brooklyn Schoolhouse have had a range of services, including but not limited to Special Education Itinerant Teachers (SEITs), in-school Occupational Therapists, and out-of-school Speech and Language Therapists. We assist families in coordinating services through the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) and Early Intervention (EI).
Do you offer financial aid?
Yes, we offer tuition assistance to all qualifying families.
Does Brooklyn Schoolhouse follow the Department of Education’s calendar?
Our school year runs from September to May with an optional summer program in June and July. To accommodate families with older children, we try our best to align our calendar with the Department of Education as well as local private schools.
What schools do children attend after Brooklyn Schoolhouse?
